Tax Lien Extended
Recently I was working with a client who had some very old individual income tax debts. The collection statute should have expired on the debts, but the client was still receiving some notices from the IRS. I contacted the IRS and the federal tax liens that had been filed were extended by the IRS.
Thus, even though the IRS could not actively enforce collection of the tax debt, they could maintain the filing of the federal tax lien because the tax debt was never satisfied.
We can request a release of the lien under certain circumstances and that is likely the option which needs to be considered.
